Creating the costumes for a ballet is like creating a new collection: there is a real parallel between these two worlds. The pieces produced in our workshops are Haute Couture pieces. For a maison to be considered Haute Couture, it must meet a few specific criteria. Among the requirements, there is the need for all the garments to be hand-and-tailored-made in the maison’s own workshops, characteristics that are also found in the making of the Paris Opera artists’ costumes. (Lasserre and Darnige, 2020) Made by the same hands as those who work for very prestigious Parisian maisons, the costumes are a unique piece of art tailor-made for each performer. As the Paris Opera lead dancer Hugo Marchand says when talking about stage costumes: “ Everything is done by hand while other companies often outsource. The most prestigious luxury discipline today is “Haute Couture” and very few luxury maisons can boast of being a part of it. This experience pushed me to take an interest in the relationship between the worlds of luxury and ballet and to examine the history of the great couturiers serving theater arts.
